Objections to Gaia

Back

When James Lovelock first put forward his Gaia Hypothesis, there was a strong undercurrent of criticism from many members of the scientific establishment.

This page originally reported on these objections. In particular, the hypothesis appeared to irritate those who clearly needed to maintain natural selection as a dogmatic prop to their view of the world.

A web search undertaken recently indicates that various sites previously quoted on this issue have now been discontinued. Overt criticism seems limited to Lovelock's championing of Nuclear power as the only realistic way to limit global warming.

Another site provides a gently critical view of his latest book, together with appended comments from a variety of positions.
